SEACOAST ENTERTAINMENT ARTS INC., 2882 Sandy Point Road, Shelburne, Nova Scotia
DESTINATION: CANADA INCENTIVES
NEW YORK, NY: Football Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett, the running back who holds the all-time record for a 99-yard touchdown run (among other NFL titles) soon will be seen hosting a weekly television talk show with his son, NFL great Anthony Dorsett, Jr.
But why is this high-profile U.S. talk show being filmed in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, of all places on earth?
Says “Dorsett Round Table” co-producer Basem Zakariya, president of Structured Capital Group, Inc., of New York City, “We are now partners with Seacoast Film Studios (Shelburne). This studio facility, in combination with the amazing incentives offered by Nova Scotia, makes it a remarkably attractive place to produce our film projects.”
The “Round Table” will feature guest appearances by international celebrity athletes and entertainers and will be aired on a soon-to-be announced U.S. based cable network premiere in conjunction with the Super Bowl.
This is only one of a growing list of film projects lining up for production in and around Seacoast Studios’ 33,000 square feet of studio space with more than 24,000 sq ft of furnished office space and a hotel and restaurants for staff and crew.
Says Zakariya, “It’s a wonderful location. The weather is surprisingly good. And, after all, it is only a one and one half hour flight from New York City.”
The film lineup started moving forward quickly this summer when Structured Capital Group became a partner in Seacoast Film Production Studios – originally a Canadian Forces base purchased in 2008 by American entrepreneurs Mary Barstow of New Hampshire and James Kendrick of Florida.
The good news for residents from Yarmouth to Halifax is that the Seacoast Studios primarily employs people from the local area. And films done at Seacoast Studios have a history of employing Nova Scotia writers, photographers, union film staffers, trades people, maintenance workers, chefs and kitchen and housekeeping associates.
Structured Capital Vice President Michael Clarner believes that the joint venture with the Shelburne facility is “an amazing opportunity for everyone involved.”
Clarner says, “Structured Capital Group has been putting together film financing programs for a while, but now with Seacoast Film Studios as our partner, we are reaching a whole new level of involvement in the movie industry.”
Before announcing upcoming movies and television shows slated for “Seacoast,” Studio President Mary Barstow explains that she and her partner purchased the base with an eye toward hosting film projects and eventually producing independent films on site. Their most recent production was “Moby Dick,” starring William Hurt, Ethan Hawke, Jillian Anderson and Donald Sutherland.
More than 350 area residents found temporary part-time and full-time employment as a result of this single movie project. Downtown businesses in Shelburne and elsewhere reported substantial upticks in sales during the production of “Moby Dick.” Film Nova Scotia of Halifax was responsible for coordinating the province-wide effort.
“400 Boys” production finds cooperation in China.
Soon after “The Dorsett Round Table” begins work, “400 Boys,” a fantasy targeting young people, co-produced by Blonde Films of Montreal, Canada, begins production. This project is completely unique, says Zakariya, because co-production is being done with the cooperation of the government of China.
Producer Alastair Paton of Montreal echoes Structured Capital Group, saying, “Nova Scotia is perfect to develop the film. And Seacoast Studios facility in Shelburne is a top-notch venue in which to create movies.”
In coming weeks, Structured Capital and Seacoast will announce production of several other films.
Final negotiations are underway for “Unmade Man,” a mobster film based on a true story and earmarked for production at the studio in Shelburne and in Miami. Producers Helene Shaw and Trish Doolan (Doolan/Shaw Productions) are also in final negotiations to bring their movie “Dancing Fool” to Seacoast Studios, scheduled for production in Spring, 2011, turning the soundstage into a magical London town. Dancing Fool is written by Trish Doolan, who will direct.
Other high-profile films currently in pre-production include “Havana Heat,” being produced in partnership with Tayrona Entertainment Group.
During the development stage of the Structured Capital Group / Seacoast Studios joint venture, the facility will be upgraded to include a post-production film editing suite and an animation studio.
Structured Capital Group / Seacoast Studios offers film makers a multi-faceted opportunity including (1) financing packages; (2) availability of the Seacoast Studios facilities; (3) incentives offered by the Nova Scotia and Canadian governments coordinated with the assistance of the Film Nova Scotia office in Halifax; and (4) North and South American distribution.
Although details of upcoming films are still held within confidentiality agreements, Barstow and Zakariya are able to offer up film titles which will soon be well-known along the South Shore of Nova Scotia, such as “The Nappers,” “Poison Needles,” “24 with Reggie” and “The Gathering.”
The joint venture between Structured Capital Group and Seacoast Studios will produce primarily PG and PG-13 films. Their offices are in Shelburne, New York City and New Hampshire.
